The freedom to read is part of our First Amendment rights, and decisions about what books people choose to read should remain with families, educators, and communities—not politicians.

Script 2: Equal Access / Educational Opportunity

Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a constituent from [CITY/ZIP].

I’m calling to let [LEGISLATOR] know that I’ll be voting for the freedom to read in November. Every student deserves the opportunity to discover books that help them learn, grow, and imagine what’s possible. The freedom to read is an important part of equal educational opportunity.

When books disappear from shelves, students lose opportunities to encounter new ideas, perspectives, and experiences. Please protect students’ freedom to read.

Script 3: Empathy / Do Unto Others

Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a constituent from [CITY/ZIP].

I’m calling to let [LEGISLATOR] know that I’ll be voting for the freedom to read in November. We may not all choose the same books for our children, but we can respect every family’s right to make those choices for themselves.

What one family chooses not to read shouldn’t determine what another family is allowed to read. We don’t have to agree on every book to agree that families, educators, and communities deserve the freedom to make these decisions.
